The business need

Kelsey Plant Hire and Engineering (Now known as FTH Hire Group) is a business in the construction industry, based in Horsham, West Sussex. They hire out plants and machinery to the trade and public, whether it’s small tools like hand drills, or much larger machines such as excavators, rollers and compressors.

Nadine Clark, the ex-Managing Director, recognised the need for a business coach was the best route to help her realise her ambitions for the company. Even though the business had been running since 1994 and was fairly stable, something was missing from it to enable further growth or change.

“Before working with a coach, I would say the business was just bumping along. It had bumped for 18 years, so it wasn’t doing too badly, but nothing was growing.

I’d always known for a long time there was a lot more that I could be doing, but I didn’t know what it was. The business at that point was pretty static.”

After discovering Tim Rylatt’s free 90-minute consultation, from Growth Coach, Nadine decided to take the plunge and take up that offer.

There were immediate changes that improved the business and some which were more gradual, helping the overall long-term growth and value of the company.

Tim supplied Nadine with some valuable contacts for things that needed to be changed in the business, such as her website, HR and accounting. This saw some immediate effect, however, over time Nadine started to notice some more significant improvements as a result of the actions she was taking from the coaching sessions.

Her marketing had been revamped, which resulted in gaining more and more new customers each year.

“Initially there were about 150 new customers a year, but by the time that I sold the business that was up to 300 per year, which made an enormous difference!”

Other distinguishable differences included the systematisation of processes, some of which were non-existent before Tim’s help.

The second Director was able to exit the company very smoothly and was replaced by two new members of staff which meant if one was away, it didn’t mean everything fell onto Nadine’s shoulders, resulting in less stress for her at work. 

Nadine was eventually able to acquire a second business, which was not possible before Tim’s private business coaching to develop the company. Gaining this second business helped Kelsey Plant Hire and Engineering become what it needed to be before it could be sold and valuable to someone else.

Results & impact

Nadine found that working with Tim significantly improved her self confidence and decision making, whilst improving the business and building it to a point where it was saleable for a life-changing sum.

“Coaching has been marvellous and the end result was what I wanted.

I wanted to be able to sell the business and that happened this year (2021).

I now have my life balance where it needs to be. I can spend time with friends and family. I have no stress. It’s just marvellous!”
